2024 Pawsey Summer Internship Showcase
Let’s talk net-zero and AI! Our #SaturdayScience Spotlight presented an outstanding internship project directed by Dr Mahathir Almashor and Sam West from CSIRO
This project addresses the challenge of securely generating synthetic data for energy research using advanced AI techniques. The objective consists of tackling constraints such as data privacy, regulatory limits, and competitive considerations in Energy domain.
How it Works:
Leveraging the latest in generative AI to learn from existing datasets, the project aims to synthesize statistically similar data, which allows for easier collaborations without compromising sensitive information. This innovative approach, akin to synthetic data in bio-medical research, holds promise for the clean energy transition.
Addressing Concerns:
In a landscape where sharing raw data can be challenging, this project seeks to provide a more achievable pathway compared to emerging techniques like homomorphic encryption. CSIRO Energy, as custodians of crucial datasets, plays a pivotal role in applying AI techniques to create secure, synthetic stand-ins.
Unique Testbed:
With access to CSIRO Energy’s diverse datasets—ranging from building energy systems to power grid operations—the project integrates classical machine-learning approaches, and cutting-edge data-driven models. The synergy of expertise and infrastructure, including invaluable HPC and GPUs from Pawsey, makes this an exciting endeavour.
