Supercharged Science with Setonix GPUs!
We’re excited to share the groundbreaking work of Ilkhom Abdurakhmanov and Maciej Cytowski supporting Nick Antonio and Alisher Kadyrov from Curtin University! They’ve successfully ported a complex code used in ion-atom collision physics to run on powerful GPUs (Graphics Processing Units).
This is a major leap forward, making these simulations 68 TIMES MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT and 77 TIMES FASTER!
What does this mean?
Imagine studying collisions between tiny particles. This research helps us understand everything from fusion energy to cancer treatment! Previously, simulating these collisions took a lot of time and energy. By using GPUs, the researchers can now do these simulations much faster and more efficiently at Pawsey and thanks to portability achieved for NVIDIA as well as AMD GPUs it will be also available at other supercomputing centres in Australia and around the world.
Why is this a big deal?
This achievement paves the way for even more advanced simulations in ion-atom collision physics and related disciplines. It also highlights the increasing role of GPUs in scientific computing, leading to faster discoveries and a brighter future! Want to learn more?
