Congratulations to NCI for the recent funding announcement

The Pawsey Supercomputing Centre is delighted to receive the news that the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI) has been awarded funding to replace its supercomputer Raijin.

The Australian Government announced in the Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook (MYEFO) that the Department of Education and Training will provide $70 million to boost supercomputing power at NCI.

This announcement demonstrates the Australian Government’s recognition of the critical importance of supercomputing, and the urgent need for investment to continue to support Australia’s economic growth and well-being.

The Australian Government’s 2016 National Research Infrastructure Roadmap specifically recognised the critical importance of supercomputing facilities, and Australia’s Chief Scientist Dr Alan Finkel said high-performance computing is a national priority:

“Throughout our consultations to develop the 2016 National Research Infrastructure Roadmap the critical importance of Australia’s two high-performance computers was manifestly clear,” Dr Finkel said.

From everyone at Pawsey we’d like to offer congratulations to our colleagues at NCI on this announcement, we look forward to continuing to work together to fulfil the needs of Australia’s researchers, keeping the nation at the forefront of the international research landscape.
