Meet GPU Hackathon Mentors – Preparing NERSC Applications for Perlmutter as an Exascale Waypoint by Dr Charlene Yang
11:00am - 12:00pm
As part of the International GPU Hackathon, GPU experts will be visiting Perth from different coordinates and will present on various topics.
This talk will give an overview of the newly procured supercomputer Perlmutter at the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC), Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). It will discuss the rationale behind Perlmutter’s design, some architectural details and Perlmutter’s timeline for delivery. It will also discuss the application readiness efforts that help transition 7000 NERSC users and 800 NERSC codes from multi-/many-core CPU architectures to the GPU-accelerated next-generation pre-exascale system. Some of these efforts are the NERSC Exascale Science Application Program (NESAP), performance portability engagements within the community, and performance tools/libraries exploration. Time permitting, this talk will also discuss the Roofline Performance Model and how it is being used for performance analysis on NVIDIA GPUs.
Dr Charlene Yang is an application performance specialist at the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC), Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). Her work is focused on performance characterization, performance optimization, and performance portability. She works with code teams in the NERSC Exascale Science Application Program (NESAP), helps identify performance bottlenecks and advises on code optimization strategies. She also advocates for the Roofline Performance Model and is actively involved in the development of this model.
Charlene holds a PhD degree in Electric, Electronic Engineering from The University of Western Australia.
