Meet the speakers

Yathu Sivarajah - Visualisation SpecialistYathu Sivarajah

Yathu is responsible for the visualisation services and infrastructure at Pawsey Supercomputing Research Centre. He has led various visualisation procurements including design, implementation of various visualisation systems and services at Pawsey. Yathu leads the visualisation team who helps researchers develop workflows to visualise large scientific data using the Pawsey visualisation infrastructure.

Yathu obtained his PhD in Geophysics from The University of WA and specialises in scientific visualisation, human-data interactions and human-machine interactions.

Ali Zamani

Ali is a Visualisation Specialist with an engineering background and specialises in visualising scientific data.

With extensive exposure to VTK technology and script visualisation this puts him in good stead to supply researchers with an in-depth insight into their simulation, resulting in an integrated time-efficient workflow. His experience of working on fluid flow in porous media is a significant asset in the support of geoscientists.

Ali provides customised high-end hardware/software packages for different case studies in Geoscience, Petroleum Engineering, CFD, and eHealth. His extensive knowledge in image segmentation and processing of microscopy images (micro-CT, SEM) helps generating large-scale visualisations in high-resolution.

Dr. Maja Divjak

Dr. Maja Divjak

Dr. Maja Divjak is the inaugural Biomedical Animator at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, where she is creating animations about cellular and molecular mechanisms leading to cancer. Maja completed her PhD in molecular Biology at Monash University before moving into scientific sales. A chance meeting with world-renowned Biomedical Animator Dr Drew Berry at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute opened the doors to the wonderful world of bio-animation. Maja then pursued her dream of becoming a Biomedical Animator, studying Multimedia at Swinburne and 3D animation at the Australian Film Television and Radio School. In 2013 she won a coveted animation fellowship with Dr Drew Berry and has been animating professionally ever since.

Her creations have been exhibited at the Vivid Festival of Light, Music and Ideas and have won several awards, including a platinum Remi award at the Worldfest Houston International Film Festival, Jury Award at the Raw Science Film Festival, the Medical Education Award- Motion Media at BioImages, awards of Outstanding Excellence at the Doctors Without Borders Film Festival and Official Selection at the Melbourne Documentary Film Festival.

Prof Aleksandra FilipovskaProfessor. Aleksandra Filipovska

Professor Aleksandra Filipovska is the Deputy Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Synthetic Biology and an NHMRC Senior Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia. She received her PhD in 2002 from the University of Otago, New Zealand. From 2003-2005 she was a NZ Foundation for Research, Science and Technology Fellow at the MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit in Cambridge, the United Kingdom. In 2006 she relocated to Australia as a NHMRC Howard Florey Fellow and established her research group at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research at the University of Western Australia.

She was an Australian Research Council Future Fellow until 2014 and since 2014 she has been a NHMRC Senior Research Fellow and Professor at UWA and the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research. She established a second laboratory, the Mitochondrial Disease Therapy group at Telethon Kids Institute in 2019. Her research interests are in the regulation of gene expression and the use of multi-omic technologies to elucidate their molecular functions in health and disease. Her research group uses genomic technologies and synthetic biology to design new models of cancer, metabolic and cardiovascular diseases and to develop treatments for these disorders.
