Nix Perth Server Resource Application

Networks of Imaging eXcellence (NIX) is an international alliance established for the purpose of accelerating research in quantitative imaging in medicine. The NIX Alliance links global sources of data with diverse expertise in image processing and analytics, biophysical modelling, biology and clinical medicine. NIX addresses the rapid transition of medicine to a discipline driven by informatics, providing an environment to enable derivation of reliable, validated imaging biomarkers. The NIX alliance enables derivation and repetitive refinement of these biomarkers in the context of the rapidly evolving field of analytics. Nix Perth is the branch of Nix providing coordination and support for collecting and processing data-sets from qualifying trials at medical and academic institutions in Perth as well as across Australia. The project is the establish and operate a medical imaging data bank that can receive imaging data from multiple institutions in a privacy-preserving manner, provide controlled access to that data from approved external collaborators for analysis, and provide links to high-performance computing resources for analysis.

The Challenge

Medical imaging contains substantial quantities of information that can be prognostic of disease and treatment outcomes and/or which can provide insights into the nature of disease. The problem is to collect high-quality data that is well curated and harmonised, and to provide access to that data by the experts developing relevant analytics methods.

The Solution

We will operate a cloud database system – the XNAT system developed from the Washington University in St Louis. This system will provide capacity for appropriate data collection and curation and controlled, privacy-preserving access for analytics processes.

The Outcome

Nimbus provides the ideal environment for operating the XNAT system, and the data storage resources are ideal for the large amounts of data generated through medical imaging in clinical trials.
