Pawsey Internships: Call for Projects

The Intern Project Call for 2023/2024 is now Open through Friday 9th June 2023.
We are seeking strategic super compute, cloud compute, data, and visualisation projects for the 2023/24 Pawsey Summer internship Program (Program).
The Program will run from late November 2023 through mid February 2024.
This annual Program pays Interns, using a co-funding model. That is, Pawsey and Projects / Researchers share the funding (co-fund) the payment of a student’s stipend.
Successful Intern Projects will receive allocations on Pawsey infrastructure. Project Interns will have access to extensive training and will be coached by Mentors, who work in parallel with Project Supervisors for the success of the student and the project.
Project submissions are open 15 May – 9 June AoE (Anywhere on Earth time zone) – Call extended to 16th June 2023
What types of projects can apply?
We encourage applications from projects that move forward the state of the art in one or more of the following areas:
- Your Computational Domain / Field
- Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence (ML & Al)
- Code Optimisation
- Data Management and Complex Workflows
- Quantum Computing
- Visualisation
ALL domains are welcome! This includes, but is not limited to: computational humanities, medicine, bioinformatics, CFD, radio astronomy, climate, etc.
ALL projects must focus on student learning. We seek projects that will develop student “real-world” skills in computation and research.
Who can apply?
All researchers/scientists working in Australian universities, institutions and government (Local, State, Federal).
Each project requires at least 2 supervisors (Primary and Secondary). You can be:
- Primary Supervisor is an Early Career Researchers (ECR).
- Mid to Late Career Researcher is the Secondary (or Tertiary) Supervisor and Mentor to the ECR.
- Required co-funding from the Researcher is $4000 AUD.
- Primary Supervisor is a Mid to Late Career Researchers.
- Early, Mid, or Late Career Researcher is the Secondary (or Tertiary) Supervisor.
- Required co-funding from the Researcher is $6,000 AUD.
Each Primary Supervisory can submit only 2 projects, and can be named as a Secondary Supervisor on only 2 projects.
What is expected from the project supervisors?
As a condition of award, Pawsey Intern Project Supervisors are expected to:
- Engage actively with their project intern/s.
- Alert Pawsey if an intern/s is not in attendance for more than 2 days
- Make project progress throughout the internship.
- Submit a short mid-Program status update (January 2024).
- Be available for the entire duration of the Internship Program.
What students will you work with?
Students from across Australia apply for Internship projects. To be eligible, students must be:
- Currently studying at an Australian University
- In an undergraduate course: 2nd, 3rd, or Honours OR in a postgraduate program: Master’s or PhD
- Have working rights in Australia.
We will place a student with successful projects by either:
- Nominations: You nominate a particular student for your project. They must successfully go through the Student Intern application process.
- Matching: We match the skills you require with a pool of applicants. We shortlist the applicants and send to you for selection.
All successful students (Interns) will attend a 1-week skills bootcamp to learn how to use Pawsey resources.

Pawsey Summer Internship in a Nutshell
In brief, the Program:
- Runs for 12 weeks, from late November through mid February, inclusive of a 2-week shutdown at the end of the calendar year.
- Seeks innovative projects nationally and across domains.
- Accepts up to 2 project submissions from each Primary Supervisor / Principle Investigator.
- Focuses on student learning, seeking projects that will develop student “real-world” skills in computation and research.
- Attracts top students nationally from a wide variety of universities.
- Provides students a paid opportunity to work alongside leading national and/or international supervisors and collaborators.

- Successful, matched students notified.
- Successful students accept invitation and sign recruitment contracts
- September-October: CSIRO administration re: student onboarding
