Vale the Hon Dr. Mal Bryce AO

It is with the deepest regret that the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre acknowledges the passing of the Hon Mal Bryce AO on 4 March 2018.

Mal was an important politician in Western Australia. But, furthermore he was a visionary who was ahead of his time; always so passionate about technology.

Mal’s innovative achievements included the establishment of the Small Business Development Commission as it was then known, the Scitech Discovery Centre and the Department of Computing and Information Technology; and the establishment of Technology Park in Bentley, where the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre is located.

Mal was instrumental in the creation of the Centre – he was Chairman of its Board for ten years including its inception as iVEC and transformation into the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre.

His career did not go unnoticed, he received several recognitions. Among them, he was made Officer of the Order of Australia in 1989 for services to the WA parliament. In 2012, Mal was awarded the Pearcey Medal, and inducted into the Australian ICT Industry Hall of Fame “In recognition of a distinguished lifetime achievement and contribution to the development and growth of the Australian Information and Communications Technology Industry”. In 2013 he was elected as a Fellow in the World Academy of Productivity Science.

He will forever be remembered for his impetus and determination, but especially for his solidarity and friendship.

Mal Bryce was very much a family man, and our thoughts and condolences are with them during this difficult time.
