The Pawsey Supercomputing Research Centre today launches its interactive annual review, inviting readers to explore 25 years of computational innovation that has helped transform Australia’s scientific landscape.
The digital experience charts Pawsey’s journey from its humble beginnings—when the Centre’s first computer supported just 10 researchers—to today’s national-scale infrastructure serving more than 4,000 scientists. Now home to Setonix, one of the world’s most energy-efficient supercomputers equipped with more than 700 GPUs, Pawsey has become the computational backbone of Australian discovery, powering advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and beyond.
“This interactive report captures the human stories behind our technological achievements,” said Mark Stickells AM, CEO of Pawsey Supercomputing Research Centre. “Through the voices of researchers, staff, board members and directors, we showcase not just what we have built, but how it has accelerated science across disciplines.”
Stories from the scientific community
The report features reflections from researchers, directors, board members, and staff on how Pawsey’s infrastructure has enabled breakthroughs across astronomy, climate science, health, and materials research. It also traces the rapid evolution of computational power—from early processing capabilities to today’s sophisticated AI-driven technologies that underpin cutting-edge research.
Looking ahead: AI and quantum horizons
Beyond celebrating past achievements, the interactive report highlights Pawsey’s vision for the future. Readers can discover how artificial intelligence and quantum computing are poised to reshape Australian research, with Pawsey at the forefront of integrating these transformative technologies into accessible national infrastructure.
An interactive experience
Unlike traditional reports, this digital platform allows visitors to navigate Pawsey’s story at their own pace, with multimedia content that brings 25 years of scientific advancement to life. The format reflects Pawsey’s commitment to innovation not only in supercomputing but also in how science is communicated to the broader community.
