A big congratulations to Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s (ORNL) Summit supercomputer in claiming number 1 in the new TOP500 list – the first time in in six years, America has claimed the top spot.
Summit is an IBM Supercomputer, which was commissioned in June 2018 at the U.S. Department of Energy’s ORNL. Summit performs a whopping 122.3 petaflops on the Linpack benchmark, which is used to rank supercomputers on the TOP500 list. Summit has 4,356 nodes, each one equipped with two 22-core Power9 CPUs, and six NVIDIA Tesla V100 GPUs. The nodes are linked together with a Mellanox dual-rail EDR InfiniBand network.
The TOP500 list is announced at ISC High Performance (ISC), which held in Frankfurt every year. The week long series of events, workshops, tutorials and Birds of Feathers (BoFs) is dedicated to tackling HPC technological development and its application in scientific fields, as well as its adoption in commercial environments.
As a Tier-1 High Performance Computing (HPC) facility for Australia, the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre team will be here to learn of the best and latest practices, methods and technologies used in the supercomputing world, to provide the latest services and infrastructure to our researchers at home. We are also here to meet with collaborating organisations such as PRACE and NSCC to create opportunities for all of our users including international training, BoFs, Hackathons and more!
