Pawsey radio-astronomy supercomputer Galaxy has begun storing live data streamed from the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) telescope in northern WA.
ASKAP is now producing an enormous 5.2 terabytes (15% of global Internet traffic) of data per second, which is processed on site and then streamed down to Galaxy and stored at the rate of 956 gigabytes every 12 hours.
The Minister of Industry and Innovation, Greg Hunt, made the announcement of ASKAP’s production of live data in a press release on January 16.
ASKAP is a precursor telescope for the SKA, the most powerful telescope to be ever constructed.
